Where to stay in Lanzarote? First of all, congratulations on your choice. Lanzaroteis a special island. Its nature is stunning and its volcanoes are fascinating, like the ones you can see in the fantastic Timanfaya National Park.

The perfect climate of the Canaries also gives you the chance to visit and discover Lanzarote as an off-season destination. Of course, you won’t be able to enjoy swimming, but if you want to experience the island far and wide without too many people, the winter months can also be an excellent choice.

Choosing where to stay in Lanzarote, on the other hand, depends on what kind of trip you are planning. Let’s see what are the best options.

Best places where to stay in Lanzarote

Besides the kind of trip you have decided to follow, choosing where to sleep in Lanzarote is important to understand how you will move around. My personal advice is to rent a car as I did in my three-day itinerary in Lanzarote. Set up your base in one place and from there leave every day to discover the island.

So, off the top of my head, I would say that the best place to stay in Lanzarote is probably the central area of the island, where most of the tourism is focused.

Arrecife, the capital, or Puerto del Carmen, are very busy places from a tourist point of view. If you are young, they are the ideal place to stay in Lanzarote, full of places to go in the evening.

If you want a quieter life, you can choose more secluded locations in the north or south and enjoy the serenity of the island.

Having explored the island in “a three-day full immersion”, I can give you a complete overview of the various areas where you can stay.

Where to stay in Lanzarote in Puerto del Carmen

Let’s begin with the most vibrant part of Lanzarote. A town that is only a few kilometers from the capital and is located in the central part of the island overlooking the African coast. Puerto del Carmen is the core of the island in every aspect. It’s definitively one of the best places to stay in Lanzarote.

According to my experience it is a perfect place to stay in Lanzarote, it is an excellent base from which to explore the various places of interest in Lanzarote every day.

It is full of restaurants and places to go for a drink and spend the evening with friends or just listening to good music.

Where to stay in Lanzarote in Arrecife

Arrecife is the capital. Spending the night in Arrecife area will mean “blending” even more with the locals. It is not taken into account as other tourist spots in Lanzarote and this is reflected in the accommodation costs. As for Puerto del Carmen, Arrecife is also centrally located and is therefore a perfect base from which to explore the island.

Where to stay in Lanzarote: Costa Teguise

Located north of Arrecife is another well known destination to spend a stay in Lanzarote. It is known to be very windy and therefore home to windsurfers. Compared to Puerto del Carmen, it offers less nightlife, but still remains a strategic starting point to visit all the island.

Where to stay in Lanzarote in Playa Blanca and the South Coast

If you are looking for beaches and quiet without the stress of moving around all the time and you have no interest in nightclubs, the southern part of Lanzarote is the right place for you. It’s really a great place to stay in Lanzarote if you want sun and relax.

Playa Papagayo is a spectacular area, and staying a short distance away from it is no small thing. Of course, the location is inconvenient for visiting the rest of the island, depending on what your needs are.

Where to stay in Lanzarote: El Golfo

Who would say that, as you descend towards the sea, perched among the volcanoes, there is a little gem of this kind. El Golfo is a town on the west coast of Lanzarote. Look at the ocean. Those who live there look at the ocean every day, tasting fairytale sunsets lulled by the sound of the waves on the rocks.

El Golfo is a small town near the green lake. If you are looking for peace, quiet and sunsets, this is the ideal place for you. I also recommend you to try one of the restaurants that overlook the sea.

If I were to return to Lanzarote, I would spend at least one night in El Golfo. Although it is a little far from Puerto del Carmen, it is a very special and interesting village.

The North of Lanzarote to el Mirador del Rio

Both North and South of the island have their strengths and weaknesses. As for nature and landscapes, they win hands down. The north, with its fantastic landscapes from the Mirador del Rio, is hard to top.

At the same time they are not easy to reach. The north coast is about 35 kilometres from the capital and about 1 hour and 15 minutes from the south. Distances are not unfeasible although they are uncomfortable. It depends on what you prefer.
