Todra Gorges: among the rocky walls of the Atlas Mountains

I recommend you to visit the Todra Gorges after the Dades Gorges. They’re just few chilometers far from them alog the road to the Middle Atlas. Here the landscape and the villages are very rural. Small towns like Tinghir just near the gorges.

Where to stay next to the gorges

During my itinerary of two weeks in Morocco I visited both but in two different days because I wanted to spend the right time with them. I spent the night in Tinghir at the Maison d’Hote Valentine just a few hundred meters from the entrance of the Gorges.

Staying overnight nearby and having the possibility to visit the Todra gorges early in the morning is vital to truly appreciate them. Around 11 a.m. the first buses of the various agencies begin to arrive. From a small paradise it turns into a small market. It’s always very beautiful but far less fascinating.

Todra Gorge: how do they look like?

The gorges develop in a flat way and it’s a short stretch. I don’t think it goes as far as one kilometre. They are special because they are narrow and the river emerges only halfway down the gorges.

Cold water emerges from the ground and begins to flow towards the village of Tinghir. You can see the local women using this water for some daily activity and my advice is not to photograph them sneakily. The local population is used to tourists but certainly they are not like the ones you will find when visiting Marrakech.

Arriving by car to the gorges, before the entrance you will find a large parking lot on the left right before a tavern. A question will pop up spontaneously… do I park here or can I go further? The answer is: drive further. The road continues, runs through the gorges and continues to the village of Toumliline. It is an ordinary road in every aspect.

Near the gorges the road becomes wider and you can park on the left side directly between their walls.

Visiting the gorges early, without the crowds of tourists, means enjoying the peace and silence. Moreover, continuing towards the end of the gorges you will find a point where a via ferrata begins. If you are passionate about via ferrata I recommend you to get some information, a day on a via ferrata in the Atlas Mountains doesn’t sound bad at all!
